Beyond Infidelity: The Three Hidden Causes of a Derailed Marriage
Every marriage faces challenges, but the greatest threat often isn’t an external force. The real enemy is the "unseen hand of folly passion" that can derail your home and destiny. Discovery is the key to recovery, and until you identify the hidden forces at play, you can't conquer them.
This post will reveal three surprising reasons why spouses cheat and show you how to build a marriage so strong, it's impossible to derail.
The Unseen Hand of Folly Passion
When a mind is consumed by lust, it becomes deaf to godly advice and turns a heart toward self-pleasure. This unchecked passion is what leads to inevitable suffering, sorrow, and despair in a marriage.
Look at Samson. He was a champion of Israel, but his folly led him to a disgraceful, unfulfilled destiny. As Judges 16:16-31 shows, he was "tired to death" by nagging until he betrayed his secret, not knowing that the Lord had left him. Folly passion—not the Philistines—was his undoing.
A successful marriage is built on purpose, self-discipline, and contentment. It’s a journey you embark on with a clear destination, not a haphazard path. When you find the right partner, you find pleasure. When displeasure is present, it's a sign of a deeper issue.
Your ability to identify and resist the unknown hand of folly passion is your escape from sorrow.
Three Reasons Why Spouses Cheat
There are many reasons for infidelity, but here are three critical ones that can derail a marriage.
1. Long Delays in Childbirth
When the pain of infertility sets in, it’s tempting to look for a way out. Many feel shame and fear, leading them to cheat, get a secret partner, or seek immoral solutions. But the Bible tells us that God is the giver of children, and He never lets the righteous fall (Psalm 55:22). He can show you "great and unsearchable things" (Jeremiah 33:3) that you don't know. Instead of yielding to temptation, your faith in God's promises is the only way to avoid making a wrong choice that breaks your home.
2. Folly Passion
The most crucial test in a person's life is the time of success. When God blesses you and things are going well, will you still remain faithful? Many people, like King David, become too difficult to please once they gain wealth or power. David's idleness and power led him to desperately act on his lust for Bathsheba. One moment of uncontrolled passion led to a spiral of sin. When a spouse starts to keep secrets or shows a lack of affection, it's a sign that a "folly passion" is taking over, making cheating inevitable.
3. Lack of Noble Character
A person's true character is revealed after the wedding vows. The arrogant and quarrelsome create a hostile environment, while a humble and teachable person attracts unresistant access and a peaceful home. As Proverbs 21:19 says, "Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered wife." A noble person adds value to their marriage, and as Proverbs 31:10-11 tells us, "Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value." When a spouse lacks value, the other may be tempted to cheat.
The Devastating Consequences of Your Actions
What legacy are you leaving for your children? The destructive traits you permit in your life will be passed down to them. If you cheat on your spouse, you are teaching them that infidelity is an option.
Your children may derail if they see you forsake God after He has blessed you. Cheating isn't just a physical act; it's a spiritual one. You are risking sexually transmitted diseases, the wrath of God, and a legacy of curses. You have a mantle to hand over, and your children will continue where you stopped.
You were blessed to be a blessing, not to be a cheat. The question is: What account will you present before God for the gifts He has given you?
