The Enemy Syndrome: Why We Point Fingers at Others

In many cultures and spiritual circles, we have mastered the art of the "Transfer of Responsibility." When a business fails, when a marriage hits the rocks, or when a student fails an exam, the first instinct is to look for a "who" instead of a "why." What is the Enemy Syndrome? The Enemy Syndrome is a defensive mechanism. It is easier to believe that a witch is sucking your progress than to admit that your bad attitude, lack of focus, or mismanagement is draining your bank account. By blaming an "enemy," you give yourself permission to stay exactly as you are. After all, if the problem is "out there," you don't have to change anything "in here."
